PUBLIC THREAD
INDEPENDENT CONTRIBUTIONS
Phases: Discovery | Defining | Developing | Delivering
Public Thread is a non-profit in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where they specialize in up-cycling textiles into functional items, such as bags and purses. Prior to this class, nobody really had any idea what up-cycling meant, so in a funnel-like manner, we worked our way down from how the term and other related terms are used globally, nationally, regionally, and locally over time.
For the Public Thread, I designed a catalog that ties their products back to their mission through a narrative section that keeps the story consistent across both print and digital. Beyond being a sales tool, this format could evolve into investor decks, trade show displays, social media storytelling, or even interactive web experiences. The use of string as a design element reinforces the idea of circular economy and could expand into motion graphics or packaging, turning their story into a brand language that connects across every touchpoint.
PHASE 1: DISCOVERY
During the discovery phase, I concentrated on understanding the community partner and identifying the key challenges. This involved conducting research, analyzing insights, defining the project scope, and mapping connections to uncover opportunities for meaningful design outcomes.
Key Deliverables:
Conducted secondary research and compiled key facts in Figma
Created buzz reports summarizing community and audience insights
Collaboratively built an Eres Map to visualize relationships and stakeholder connections
Developed a Trends Matrix to identify patterns and opportunities within current design and industry movements
Co-created interview questions for our first company visit to guide meaningful discussions and gather firsthand insights
PHASE 2: DEFINING
In this phase, I analyzed the research gathered during discovery to refine the project’s direction and begin shaping potential design solutions. Through idea generation and filtration, I explored multiple concepts and began building a visual and strategic foundation for development.
Key Activities & Deliverables:
Created an Intent Statement to define project goals and purpose
Developed Personas to represent target users and their needs
Mapped User Journeys to visualize experiences and identify opportunities
Conducted Interviews and Surveys to validate early insights
Began establishing Brand Assets and Visual Direction Ideation to guide design consistency
PHASE 3: DEVELOPING
With the project direction clearly defined, this phase focused on transforming ideas into tangible design solutions. I collaborated across multiple teams to refine concepts and develop high-fidelity prototypes aligned with our partner’s goals. Throughout this process, feedback and iteration played a key role in ensuring cohesive design and functionality.
Key Activities & Deliverables:
Formed teams and briefs to outline responsibilities and deliverables
Created a style guide to ensure visual and brand consistency
Collaborated with the B2B, Marketing, and Education/Community teams to develop aligned design outcomes
Designed and structured all web pages for the final prototype
Established a feedback space to gather input and iterate on design solutions
